Managing studies along with the plethora of things that transpire in the life of a college student can be a difficult thing. Since college is a different ballpark altogether, students who used to be bright in their schooling years end up seeing their marks deteriorating drastically. Here are the 5 effective study habits college students can follow to bring their train to success back on the right track.
Make a Proper Study Plan
This point cannot be stressed enough. Scheduling your time around studying is an absolute imperative. Everything else can wait. A lot of students just make a timetable, allot time for different subjects and think they have the apt studying schedule. This could have worked in the schooling years but for the college students, a much more wholesome and comprehensive approach is required. You have to break down the semester syllabus into simpler elements. Figure out how much time you will need for each subject, will you need extra supervision, what are the alternative studying techniques etc. You have to allocate the time, taking your personal strengths and weaknesses into consideration.
Reverse Engineer your Reading Habits
This is a personal and effective trick you should follow. Most college students today, complaint of having a weak attention span. To ward off these retention blues, you should start the text by reading the summary first, or go through the questions pertaining to the topic beforehand. The summary and questions of the topic induce curiosity. As you read through the text, the answers to those questions will unfold in front of you and the curiosity risen by the summary gets it’s fodder.
Self assessment is an important habit to make your studying much more efficient. You have to know yourself enough to find out the best possible learning techniques. Being honest with yourself is the key, rather than blindly following the conventions. Each individual has a different grasping and retaining power. Some students are aural learners, who should listen to TED Talks or audio books. Creating images pertaining to the written information is helpful for the visual learners. Another thing to be taken into consideration is the time of studying. You have to know what time suits you best. Some people are comfortable in early morning studying, whilst some are night owls. Choosing the right studying area exclusively for yourself is also important. The mood of that area should be tailor made according to your personal interests. Whether a soft tungsten light in the background or a harsh white one to wake the guts out of you. You have to be creative and tactful for smart learning.
Get enough Rest
This is a much neglected and underrated point for all you obsessive learners out there. Sleep deprivation is one of the most common issues young college students face. So much to do with so little time is a constant complaint. Depriving yourself of sleep not just makes your mood all grumpy, it has serious physical repercussions as well! Constant sleep deprivation results in brain fog, making it difficult to concentrate and make the right decisions. It also makes the memory impaired and compromises your immune system. Definitely not the right mental setup for a student. Ideally, sleeping seven and a half hours a day should do. Although, some people can do with six and some unfortunate folks need more than eight. Find your apt sleeping time and follow a proper sleep pattern to get the right amount of rest before hitting the books.
Despite the fact that technology and social media are extremely useful tools, they sometimes can be huge sources of distraction too. The fact that the social media is essentially about catching and retaining your attention span makes it a complete no-no anytime whilst studying. You should keep your cellphones and other distractive devices on silent or switch them off completely. A friend’s farewell party before leaving town is not an excuse for skipping that important lesson. Having a social life is important to keep your mental sanity intact but you have to be able to prioritize. Have a decent balance between your social life and your study lessons as both are important in your personal growth.
Do NOT Procrastinate
One of the major problems students face before starting a difficult topic is- they do not start it at all! Procrastination has its serious implications because some time or the other you’ll have to get through it, so why not right now? Putting off work just adds more and more load to the student. When you have a proper study plan in place you have to religiously follow it. There are no exceptions because it is bound to haunt you in the future. Better get rid of that ghost now!
Do NOT Hesitate
Hesitating to ask the right questions from your professors, tutors or even fellow classmates is a foolish thing to do. You have to have the habit of constantly asking questions and staying curious. If you missed out on a lecture due to some reason following up with your classmates is only a logical thing to do. Asking your professors the same question over and over again till you are completely clear with the concept may seem embarrassing but it's only reasonable as the bottomline is- you understand it.
This is a common practice for the most successful people in the world. As students, it’s a good time to start doing it. Testing your own knowledge through various creative techniques is a good way to keep the material you’ve studied fresh in your brain. Create your own sample test paper from the topic you’ve just studied. Frame questions yourself and answer them. Take a blank sheet of paper and fill it with all that you have learnt about a particular topic. Maybe create an antithesis and frame an argument to firmly believe whatever you’ve read. Try new and creative ways to constantly test yourself.
Being successful in life is a matter of habit, discipline and practice. As a college student you should follow these studying habits and follow them enough till they become a part of your lives.
