How to Use Our APA Citation Generator

1. Paste a URL, DOI, or ISBN. The generator detects the type of identifier (URL, DOI, ISBN-10, or ISBN-13) and looks up the details that are available. It uses Crossref for DOIs and journal articles, Open Library for books, and public page metadata for websites.
2. Review the source details. Check the author, date, title, and publication details, and correct anything that's missing or wrong before you create the citation.
3. Enter source details manually if needed. If a source can't be found, or its details are incomplete, open Enter source details manually. A compact side panel opens with only the fields your source type needs. It supports human and organizational authors and shows a live preview. If you close the panel, your unfinished draft is saved.
4. Choose a source type. The main types are in a quick switcher, and rarer ones are under More.
5. Copy your citations. Copy the reference list entry, parenthetical citation, or narrative citation. Italics are kept exactly where APA requires them.

Create Reference List and In-Text Citations

Many students get the reference list right and still lose points on in-text citations. Our APA in-text citation generator creates both formats for every source:

• Parenthetical citation. The author and year appear in parentheses at the end of the sentence.
• Narrative citation. The author's name is part of the sentence itself.

APA Rules Handled by the Generator

The generator also handles the cases that usually cause mistakes:

• Multiple authors and organizations as authors
• No author. The reference starts with the source title.
• No date. The generator uses n.d.
• Full dates with year, month, and day, where APA requires them
• Surnames with particles, such as Le Guin or van der Berg
• Publisher same as author. The repeated publisher name is removed.

Titles keep the capitalization you entered or that was found, so names, places, and special terms are never changed by automatic "correction."

How to Cite AI Responses in APA

Used ChatGPT or another AI tool in your research? AI response is a separate source type, so you can cite a publicly shared AI conversation or reference the AI tool itself when the original response can't be retrieved.

• Shared AI chat. Use this when the conversation has a public HTTPS link that readers can open. The chat title is italicized, and the full date is included.
• AI tool. Use this when readers can't access the specific conversation. The company that makes the tool is listed as the author, not the model itself.

If you try to cite a shared chat without a public link, the generator suggests Cite the AI tool instead. Both options give you a reference list entry, a parenthetical citation, and a narrative citation.

Always Review Your Source Details

Automatically found details can be incomplete or wrong, and some websites provide very little metadata. Before you submit, always check the author, date, title, and publication details against the original source. The generator formats citations in APA only.
