Ethical Scenario

Suppose you are a human services worker working with a client going through a

complicated divorce; the client’s name is Sarah. Sarah has been sending texts to update you on

her progress and feelings. One evening, you get a message from her that says: “I decided to tell

my ex off about the abuse.” I am relieved but scared at the same time about what is to happen

next, I never thought I could get the courage to do this, but you have been a big help." One

evening, your partner takes your phone and notices the message on the home screen, gets

interested in it, reads it, and asks you who it is from. You see that your partner has somehow

come across some files containing sensitive information about clients, and you start to

contemplate various ethical and legal issues, such as violating client privacy and the HIPAA Act.
