The Impact of Digital Worship on Redefining Spiritual Practice
Social media platforms have been gaining popularity among church leaders due to calls
from Christian ministries requiring leaders to regard their social media platforms as online sacred
spaces. Christian ministries have regarded online spaces as sacred places where God exists;
therefore, these ministries pioneer the notion that the believers who use the internet can
experience the presence of the Lord and each other within these mediums (Johnson, 2023).
Therefore, ministry leaders have been leveraging social media platforms to create cyber
sanctuaries that they can then use to bring together their congregants for true community. The
result has been the development of digital engagements that shape the formation and
development of people’s faiths (Johnson, 2023). This practice is perceptible as digital worship;
Abel et al. (2024) conceptualize digital worship as the approaches that institutions of worship use
to carry out religious activities within online spaces. The evolution of communication
technologies over the past two decades has resulted in the expansion of digital worship, which
has, in turn, redefined spiritual practice because worshipers can use their gadgets to congregate
from remote locations.
The integration of information communication technologies in people’s everyday lives
has played an integral role in fuelling the expansion of digital worship. At present, people can
use their gadgets to access worship services at any time; people can get and watch worship
programs from the comfort of their homes, while driving, and even when studying (Abel et al.,
2024). Accordingly, digital worship is hybrid in nature because people praise and worship the
Lord without the rigor related to attire, but maintain a close connection with God. Digital
worship offers congregants flexibility for views since worship services vary from a church live
stream through YouTube, Zoom, and Facebook, and conducting book discussions through
3
Messenger and WhatsApp calls, and viewing spiritual clips through TikTok (Abel et al., 2024).
Therefore, digital worship has redefined spiritual practice by creating an ecosystem that
mission-oriented churches can use to spread the word of God.
Digital worship has facilitated the development of new ways of worship that position
people to interact with the word of God through digital spaces. Abel et al. (2024) indicate that
traditional churches with a mission-oriented spirit can position worshipers to find Jesus online
through three channels. The first is finding Jesus through an online church system that is based
on God-fearing ideals. The second is through a Christian website, which mainly connects with
personal ministry. Finally, individual Christians can select to develop a relationship through
memes, social media, webpages, groups, and even videos (Abel et al., 2024). These approaches
are integral to digital evangelism, which is an all-inclusive approach to the Lord’s mission. In
this regard, one would be accurate in indicating that digital worship is a revolution in
communication since it inspires a paradigm shift to a postmodern period by empowering
Christians to expand the kingdom of God through social media platforms. The impact of digital
worship on spiritual practice is perceptible through its capacity to enhance accessibility, facilitate
the development of new avenues of connection, and change the conventional worship
experience.
Digital worship is revolutionizing spiritual worship by empowering believers to worship
from any place. This spiritual practice is different from traditional worship because people can
worship communally even if they are situated in different geographic locations (Goti, 2024).
Rankin (2024) indicates that the church incorporates people across the world who are “savingly
related to Christ” (p. 2). Therefore, the church does not have to be a physical structure where
people congregate, since digital worship has resulted in the development of online spaces where
4
Christians congregate to serve and praise the Lord. Johnson (2023) indicates that digital worship
is not a new phenomenon because globalized television broadcasting facilitated the spread of
gospel messages to people across the world--where television networks existed--during the
1980s. However, the advent of live streaming features on platforms such as Facebook and
YouTube has made the spread of spiritual content more convenient. For example, influencers like
Hillsong Worship and Gunther de Great are actively working toward creating online
communities that instill a sense of being in worshippers (Montell Fish, 2024). The most
perceptible impact that digital worship has had on redefining spiritual practice is positioning
Christians to worship as a community despite being located in distant geographical locations.
In conclusion, digital worship has significantly impacted spiritual practice by positioning
Christians to congregate and worship from different geographic locations. This development has
revolutionized the traditional view of the church from a physical place to a virtual space where
people can interact and praise the Lord. The flexibility related to digital worship has enabled
people to integrate worship into their everyday activities; people can attend sermons from their
homes, while driving, and even when studying. Further, churches can reach more faithful
through platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube. Therefore, the most significant
impact that digital worship has on spiritual practice is positioning people to congregate and
worship from different geographical locations.
