element of self-development. According to Roosevelt, maturity involves the ability to maintain

are instrumental in fostering strong, meaningful relationships.
Roosevelt viewed emotional regulation as a hallmark of maturity. A mature individual is
not easily swayed by emotions, even when faced with intense feelings. For example, a mature
person would refrain from reacting impulsively to criticism in a professional setting. Instead,
they would analyze the situation objectively, taking a step back to consider both the content of
the criticism and the context in which it was delivered. Emotional maturity enables individuals to
resolve conflicts calmly, reducing the risk of escalation into unnecessary disputes. In contrast, an
immature response; such as reacting with anger or withdrawing in silence, often exacerbates the
situation, hindering problem-solving and effective communication.
Additionally, maturity is reflected in one’s ability to recognize and accept the
multifaceted nature of people and situations. Mature individuals acknowledge that others possess
virtues and flaws and do not hastily judge people based on a single action or trait. For instance,
in long-term friendships or partnerships, it is inevitable that conflicts or disappointments will
arise (Gibson, 2023). A mature person understands that these negative moments do not define the

maintaining healthy, stable relationships with other people. When people seek adulthood, they
simultaneously improve themselves and the environment they inhabit, along with the people in
