Telescope functionality and their contribution

This undergraduate project management poster provides a detailed exploration of telescope functionality and their contribution to understanding the universe. It explains the principles behind refractor and reflector telescopes, highlighting the importance of the objective lens or primary mirror in gathering light and the eyepiece in magnifying images for clarity. The academic poster outlines key telescope properties, such as light collection and magnification, emphasizing how aperture size impacts brightness. It also showcases groundbreaking instruments like the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes, detailing their unique features and scientific contributions. Designed for undergraduates, it combines clarity and scientific depth for effective communication.

TELESCOPES
Did you know that we can't see distant objects clearly because they
take up very little space on our retina?
However, two special pieces in a telescope make this magic happen!
The Objective lens for the refractor telescope or primary mirror
for the reflector telescope, AND
1.
The Eyepiece 2.

The principle of the telescope is to gather lots of light inside it, then use
something like a magnifying glass to enlarge that light to create a bigger
image in our eyes.
The objective lens (in refractor) and the primary miror (in reflectors)
collects lots of light from far away objects and brings the light to a point of
focus. Then, an eyepiece lens spreads out the light from the focus point to
cover a larger portion of the retina.

HOW THE TELESCOPES WORK

TELESCOPES GENERAL PROPERTIES
HOW WELL THEY CAN COLLECT LIGHT
This depends on the size of aperture
used to gather light (lens or a mirror)
The larger the aperture, the more
light collected creating a brighter
image.
HOW MUCH THEY CAN MAGNIFY IMAGES
The magnification ability is related to the
combination of the used lenses
Almost any eyepiece can work on a
telescope which makes aperture a more
important feature.
TELESCOPES USED TO EXPLORE
THE UNIVERSE.
James Webb Space
Telescope
Relatively large (6.6 m) and
Can stand temperatures below 50 K (1).
Hubble Space
Telescope
Has three cameras
Benefits ; fiducial period-luminosity, photometric
calibration and a correction for Cepheid metallicity
